The Whole30 Experiment

I will just say it, I don’t have the best eating habits. I am a salty snack girl and if I am going to be completely honest, ice cream is in fact my favorite meal. The slight flaw in having my favorite meal is that my digestive system and I don’t see eye to eye. I am lactose intolerant along with 75% of the human race (FYI, I totally am making this figure up, but a lot of people are lactose intolerant so just go with it). For the past two week, I have been on the Whole30 meal plan. So what is the whole30? Well in a nut shell, Whole30 is a month long plan that stresses cleaning eating for 30 consecutive days. Created by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig, the goal of this plan is to help people learn about their relationships with potentially problematic foods, then develop a plan for which foods to avoid long-term and which to reintroduce. Whole30 cuts out a lot of fun things like Added sugar (real or artificial), Alcohol, Grains, Legumes, Dairy. So that means saying adios to having a glass or three of wine after work.

So why did I want to put myself through such a restrictive diet? Well for starters, when you count ice cream as a food group, you may have a problem. Second, this has been a long time coming. I have wanted to adopt a healthier lifestyle for some time but have always found a reason to put it off. You know, things like I have a wedding coming up or next week is July 4th, blah, blah, blah! Also, I was two seconds from needing a crowbar to get into my favorite jeans on! So as you can see, the stars were aligned for this!

So far this has been a great experience, I am never hungry and I feel great! The down side is that it requires a lot of food prep before hand. That said, this meal plan has caused me to try a number of new vegetables and cook my food in different ways! I can’t wait to show you pics when this is over July 28th! Wish me luck with the #Whole30 !!!

Here are some of the meals I have prepared so far! Feel free to email and ask any questions!

Baby It’s Cold Outside

Fur 3

Coat (similar)

Spring maybe right around the corner, but baby, it’s cold outside! Here in DC, we have had pretty bad snowstorm. Alas, life must still go on as they say, so I grabbed my trusty fox fur coat and off I went into the frigid DC weather. The coat was a splurge during the holidays and the fur is just oh so soft. I bought this Ellen Tracy coat at Lord & Taylor, but it has now sold out. Nordstrom has the same brand and similar coat and it’s on sale!

Storing My Makeup

Being a blogger, I have acquired a lot of beauty products over the years. Finding a place to store all of that makeup, nail polish, moisturizer, etc. was definitely a challenge. Initially, I stored everything in multiple makeup bags but it was not very convenient. Having to go through a bunch of bags to find a particular eyeshadow wasted more time than I care to admit. I looked for ways to streamline my makeup storage and after some searching online, I found this great set at the Container Store. I bought five pieces in the Luxe Acrylic Modular System and these pieces worked best for my needs, however, you can mix and match them how you see fit. I’ll be honest, they are a bit pricey because each piece cost between $11.99-$29.99. I have the following items from the collection: One Large Acrylic Makeup Organizer – $29.99; Two Wide Medium Luxe Acrylic Modular Drawer Clear – $29.99;  Two Half Tall Luxe Acrylic Modular Drawer Clear – $19.99 each. In total, this storage set cost me $110 plus tax. Pricey I know, but well worth it.

For my makeup brushes, I went to Michael’s and bought decorative fillers river rocks for $6.99 and this Glass Cylinder Vase for $3.99. It is a perfect for storing my brushes and keeping them all together.

For all the other makeup this I do not use regularly, I store in makeup bags!

In writing this post, I also found cheaper sets online like this one from Amazon for $28! It is a little bit smaller than mine but so is the price.

Flashback To Sunny Costa Rica

Dress: Old Navy (Similar); Hair Chain (Similar)

This being Flashback Friday, I had to talk about my amazing trip to Costa Rica last month. Especially now that I have to endure the snowy DC weather! I was in Costa Rica for my friend Crystal’s wedding. The ceremony was in Jaco, Costa Rica at this amazing resort, Zephyr Palace. For lodging, I stayed at the sister resort Villa Caletas. I am telling you now, run to this amazing paradise because everything about it was spectacular!

The sunsets are like nothing I have ever seen before and the view from the resort left me in awe. With the hustle and bustle of life, it was really calming to take a moment in the evening to watch the sunset and remember there is more to life than errands, bills and all of the other trappings of adulthood that keep us up at night. Not a moment went by that I did not think about how lucky I was to be in this majestic utopia. Best of all, I was lucky enough to travel with an awesome group of friends. My dear friend Leslie even convinced me to go ziplining (yup, I was REALLY scared but faced my fears)!

For my outfit to the wedding, I wore an orange maxi dress from Old Navy. I found it on the clearance rack for $12! I loved the dress and the color screened tropics. Since the dress itself was simple, I added the hair chain to give it that Grecian vibe. I bought for less than $10 at a beauty supply store in Houston. I did a smokey eye and a nude lip.

ME Costa Rica 1

Crystal and Jake’s wedding was hands down one of the most amazing weddings I have ever been to. To start, the location was breathtaking! The bride and groom reminded me of Ken and Barbie! The reception was beautiful, the décor was exquisite and you saw the bride’s touch in every detail. I know, they look fantastic!

Springing Into Bridal Season

My friend recently got married in what is hands down THE most amazing location I have ever been to for a wedding (more on that wedding later this week). She looked amazing and her hair and makeup were perfection so I asked to meet her beauty dream team, hairstylist Carissa and makeup artist Colleen PR Partners in Metro Center

Lucky me, I was invited to PR Partners Boutique Bridal show on Sunday and had a chance to meet the owner of the salon  Jacqui Davis and the rest of the staff. I also got to see a sneak peek of things to come for wedding season (April – October). The evening was complete with hair and makeup demonstrations, mini skin treatments sweet treats and champagne. Here are some pics from the event!

Lilly Pulitzer For Target

Target never fails to impress with its designer collaborations. For Spring 2015, they are joining forces with a fashion house that is really one of my absolute favorites, Lilly Pulitzer. Lilly’s amazing prints will hit Target stores April 19 with prices ranging from $25-$250. Here’s a sneak peek of that fabulousness to come!

My Unexplained Absence From Blogging

Over the past few months, I have been inexplicably absent from my beloved blog Colour Me Glam. This past couple of years, my bog has been my great escape. As I always say, nothing gets me more excited that a new shade of lipstick, eyeshadow palette or a new pair of shoes! Life came to somewhat of a halt earlier this year. In the summer I purchased a new home yay!!! But I was also diagnosed with a carcinoid tumor; not so great. In its simplest definition, a carcinoid tumor is a gastrointestinal cancer that forms in the lining of the gastrointestinal tract.

Needless to say, after my diagnosis, I was pulled in many different directions, seeing one specialist after another (I really did start feeling like a science project). Eventually, my doctors decided the best course of treatment was an endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). The procedure was fairly routine and would require practically zero recovery time. With EMR, doctors would be able to remove the tumor with very little discomfort to me.

Well, as they say, we make plans and God smiles. Due to a series of complications,  I spent 5 days in the hospital and 3 weeks out of work recuperating.

My family has always been in corner and it sometimes takes moments like this to remind me of just how awesome they truly are. I really have to pinch myself because I can’t believe how lucky I am. The day of the accident, my sister hopped on a plane from Houston to be by side and spent every night by my bedside in the hospital. My parents and aunts came to DC and took amazing care of me.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my amazing, thoughtful and beautiful friends who dropped what they where doing to be by my side. I cannot even begin to thank them for everything they have done for me. We may not be related by blood, but they are my family and I thank God for them everyday.

My colleagues and long distance friends were equally amazing, sending cards, flowers and best wishes. All of which made all the difference in my recovery. I thank you all for everything and I look forward to getting back to life. This incident was a reminder of just how short life really is and I plan on making the most of everyday!

I am back to blogging and I couldn’t be happier!

Linganore Wine Festival

This past Memorial Day weekend, I had the pleasure of going to the Linganore Wine Festival in Mt. Airy, MD.  The vineyard has a few festivals throughout the year, however the Caribbean Wine Festival continues to be a crowd favorite and takes place Memorial Day weekend every year and cost $20.

I spent more than two hours trying to get to the festival because of traffic, so take my advice and get there early. Gates open at 11am and the festival ends at 6pm. That being said, those two hours in the car were a blast because I was with two of my favorite people, my amazing friends Leslie and Sonya.

It was a day packed with laughs, thousands of people, tomfoolery, lots of wine and my new favorite drink moonshine a la my friend Leslie!

I even walked away with a few delicious bottles of wine!

Oxygen Facial At Karma Beauty Lounge

Karma Lounge 1

After a long week, the most exciting thing about Friday is knowing it is the start of the weekend. What better way to start the weekend then to head over to the Erwin Gomez Beauty Lounge for a blissful facial! I am not talking about just any facial, I am referring to the oxygen facial made famous by the material girl herself, Madonna.

The oxygen facial became all the rage a few years ago after it was rumored that Madonna bought the machine for her home and has become a regular user of the treatment. The treatments are said to make skin look younger and help diminish the look of fine lines. To accomplish this, your aesthetician applies pressurized oxygen, acid and a serum  (I had the hydration serum) to your skin. My aestician at Karma Lounge was Catherine and I highly recommend her. She was simply fantasic and informative. The machine is not painful or invasive, in fact, it was very soothing. Safe to say, I loved the facial.

Along with my treatment, I had a an opportunity to speak to Sab Shad, co-owner of the salon. She was gracious and gave me a great tour of this great salon. The waiting area felt like you were in your living room complete with a fireplace and comfy couch. The customer service was amazing and  their yelp reviews speaks volumes.  At the salon, you can get hair, nail, massage, makeup and off course facial services. I loved how every hair station makes you feel as if you are alone with your stylist because the stations are somewhat closed off. The makeup studio looks absolutely luxurious and serves as the place where you can get your makeup done by famed makeup artist Erwin Gomez.
