RIP Essence Beauty Box

Essence Beauty Box
It saddens my heart to say that Essence beauty box is coming to an end! I got an email yesterday at 3:13 pm ET that the Essence Magazine’s monthly subscription beauty box was coming to an end with September being the last box. I mention the time because earlier that day, I had written a blog post proclaiming how much I loved the subscription box and it was scheduled to go live today.

As a bit of background if you are not familiar with subscription boxes, they are curated monthly subscriptions of beauty or hair samples that get delivered to your house every month. Birchbox is the grand dame of the subscription box genre. These days, there is a subscription box for EVERYTHING including food, clothes, pets, etc.! Even celebrities have gotten in on the action including Kate Hudson’s Fabletics and Giuliana Rancic’s FabFitFun

I was beyond excited when Essence announced the launch of their own box for women of color. And while there are a million beauty boxes out there, very few of them cater to women of color.
The products in the Essence beauty box where really great! You actually got a generous amount of product and they made sense (sorry, but if you have natural hair like I do, you go through half a bottle of conditioner and traditional sample sizes just will not do).

So RIP Essence Beauty Box, I hope another comes along soon to make up for this void!

Bridesmaid Diaries

This past weekend, I was a bridesmaid in my cousin’s wedding. My cousin looked beautiful and the venue, The Fox Hollow in Woodbury, NY was gorgeous.

Now for my bridesmaid dress. Pink is not necessarily my favorite color, but I figured I need to make this work. As a bridesmaid, my job was simple, show up for my cousin in the dress she selected and cheer her on as she took this major step. And that is exactly what I did, I put on this Strapless Satin Short Dress with Pleating from David’s Bridal and smiled.

Since I was wearing such a bold color, I decided to keep everything else muted. I chose to go with nude sandals  from Nine West (similar) and I kept the jewelry to a minimum with simple gold diamond studs and a gold necklace from Kate Spade (similar).

Dressing Up With STYLECABLE

Uyen Tang

Style Cable - 04

It takes a leap of faith to believe in an idea so much that you leave an established career to follow your dreams. After speaking with STYLECABLE founder Uyen Tang, I quickly felt her passion for the company.

Having had careers as a foreign service officer and a consultant for a major consulting firm, Tang decided to strike out on her own. Her past careers have taken her to numerous places around the world and in every location she picked up a unique accessory or piece of clothing that made people ask “where did you get that?’

With a business management background, Tang started STYLECABLE, a fashionable marketplace for designers around the world to sell their creations. Designers and their pieces are hand selected by Tang and their collections can be purchased on STYLECABLE.

The company looks for emerging designers who have a modern, edgy aesthetic. With the support of STYLECABLE, designers are given a platform to share their story and collections which adds a personal touch. I love the pieces below!

Style With A Cause: Simbi Haiti

On January 12, 2010, the impoverished Caribbean island of Haiti was struck by a disastrous 7.0 earthquake. It is estimated that more than 100,000 people lost their lives that day. In the following months and years, the global community wrapped its arms around Haiti to provide much needed shelter and aid.

Four years later, my ancestral land is still battling to come back from the brink of disaster. There are many organizations that have stayed beyond the media sound bites to help the people of Haiti including Simbi Haiti. The company generates money for the cause by selling hair ties and headbands that keep Haitians employed and helps raise money to install water filtration systems throughout the country, saving lives. 2014 Golden Globe Fashion Recap

Last night we were treated to the 2014 Golden Globes in Los Angeles, CA. There was a lot of hype about Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting and rightfully so, they were awesome. The stars did not disappoint on the red carpet. While I did not see a lot of the old hollywood glamour that you would expect at the Golden Globes, it was still exciting. I am so obsessed with Lupita Nyong’o’s gown, it was amazing! Check out some of my other favorite looks.
